Here are the top Christmas movies of all time until then.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
As an adult in these tough times, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer seems a
little bit like the underdog tale we need. Rudolph is a legend. The story of
Rudolph and his dental hygiene-obsessed friend definitely has social justice
overtones, but at its foundation, it is a monument to the disparities between
us.
A Charlie Brown Christmas
If you haven't heard the Peanuts theme playing in a Starbucks nearby,
can you honestly say it's the holiday season? Charlie Brown, who was
experiencing a seasonal sadness episode (which is understandable), thanks his
friend Linus for helping him rediscover the true significance of the holiday.
Elf
Will Ferrell plays a clownish orphan raised by Santa and his elves in
the North Pole who travels to New York City in search of his biological father,
a cynical book publisher played by James Caan, in this absurd (and surprisingly
wonderful) fish-out-of-water story.
The Apartment
Jack Lemmon plays a single man who allows his coworkers to use his home
for their escapades before falling in love with his boss's mistress (Shirley
MacClaine). One of the greatest comedies in American cinema, Billy Wilder's
1960 comedy received the Academy Award for Best Picture with good cause.
Naturally, the events in this story about loneliness and love take place on or
near December 25.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Is The Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween or a Christmas film? That
is a question that has been debated for years. You can clearly tell which side
of the line we fall on. A superb display of visual tricks and treats, the Tim
Burton speciality is done in a spooky style that only the director is capable
of.
A Christmas Carol (1951)
This outstanding 1951 film chronicles the well-known Christmas Eve
torment of vile miser Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim), who is visited by the
ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. It is still the best version of
Charles Dickens' fabled story.
The Muppet Christmas Carol
This 1992 movie's flawless fusion of zaniness and emotion, which all
contribute to making this musical Dickens adaption an underappreciated
achievement, honours Jim Henson, who passed away during the film's
pre-production.
Bad Santa
In this hilarious black comedy, Billy Bob Thornton's stealing department store Santa adds some ugly deviancy to the holiday season.
Miracle on 34th St.
With this Christmas classic about the trial of a guy who claimed to be
Santa Claus, you can't go wrong. (The 1994 remake with Richard Attenborough and
Mara Wilson is fine, but the original is better.)
Scrooged
In a parody of Dickens, Bill Murray plays a conceited and careless TV
executive who plans to conduct a live presentation of A Christmas Carol but
ends up experiencing a twisted version of that story.
Home Alone
Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) gets left behind by his family in
this enduring children's adventure by Chris Columbus and John Hughes and is
forced to defend himself from two foolish crooks (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern)
during the course of Christmas.
White Christmas
This 1954 musical, starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye as music-act
partners who link up with two sisters (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) to
assist their old military commander to rescue his Vermont lodge, has a new
rendition of the song from which the movie gets its title.
Christmas Story
Director Bob Clark debuted this still-loved tale of nine-year-old
Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), who wants nothing more for Christmas than
an air rifle, nine years after the release of Black Christmas, albeit it was of
a completely different kind.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Rarely has a series' third episode matched the calibre of its two
predecessors, but this is the case with this threequel about the
accident-plagued family reunion of Rusty Griswold (Johnny Galecki), Clark
(Chevy Chase), Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), Audrey (Juliette Lewis), and Ellen's
sister, Ellen.
It's a Wonderful Life
Few movies better capture the spirit of Christmas than Frank Capra's
1946 fairytale starring Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, who is about to commit
himself when an angel appears to him and teaches him the value of life.
